Once we arrived at the Harpa Center, we went through the check in process, and had a complimentary breakfast. We enjoyed our river cruises so much, we decided to book an ocean cruise with Viking.

When we arrived in our stateroom, we found the Viking Daily newsletter on our coffee table. This newsletter is delivered each evening throughout the cruise and provides information regarding the events for the next day, including meeting times for excursions, along with any other general announcements. Above is a picture of the Viking Daily we received on the first day, along with a sheet that included all of the tours during the cruise and which ones were sold out. For example, Viking offers the option of booking your flights directly through Viking. Typically, their pricing is very competitive and they even offer free air fare on some cruises. For a small additional fee, you can even work with Viking to select your specific flights, including options for stopping over in other destination cities on the way to and from your cruise.

In early 2021, Viking announced several Welcome Back cruises, including a cruise around Iceland, which happened to be one of our ‘bucket list’ destinations. For us, a totally vaccinated ship along with Viking’s extensive virus protocols were enough for us to jump at the chance to travel internationally again. Solfar Sculpture – Only a short walk down the city’s beautiful waterfront area is the Solfar Sculpture. Known in English as the Sun Voyager, this well-known landmark is located right along the water on Skulagata Street. The modern sculpture was created by Jon Gunnar Arnason, an Iceland native, and pays homage to the promise of discovery, progress and freedom.
Dotted around the town, several cultural sights can be explored, including The Tank and the Eggs of Merry Bay. The town has adopted the cultural trend known as “Cittaslow” which is dedicated to the promotion of sustainable living, improving the quality of life for its residents. Reykjavík is home to endless charms, watched over by the majestic Esja mountain range. The striking Hallgrímskirkja church stands in the city center as a towering vision in white, while the glass Harpa concert hall is a wonder of modern architecture. Höfði House is one of Reykjavík's highlights and is the site of the meeting between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, which marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War. Farther afield, breathtaking natural sites are in abundance, from towering waterfalls and soaring mountains, to blue thermal springs.

The steam room follows (maximum capacity two guests sharing the same cabin) and for a moment I’m reminded of the New York City heat wave I left behind. Sweat dripping, pores open, I cross the floor to the cold room and chill out. Two Tours in a Single Bound
Portugal’s River of Gold cruise-tour offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the local food and wine, including its famous Port. The 10-day itinerary from Lisbon to Porto also crosses the border to Spain to visit Salamanca. Unlike many ships, use of the thermal suite comes at no charge. Covid restrictions, however, now require reservations be made for its use, with capacity limited to 6 guests, one hour each (the same is true of the ship’s fitness center). The Viking ocean ships have no more than 930 passengers and never feels crowded. There are several areas to relax, take in the sights and have a libation. But there are a few things you will not find on a Viking ocean ship.
The cruise line was offering a shuttle to town up until midnight. Yes, it was time for the dreaded last day of the cruise ritual. With 4 pieces of luggage, yes 4, we planned to put our two larger suitcases out this evening as part of the disembarkation process. The gray clouds and light fog meant we would need to work mostly indoors. So, we headed up to our favorite spot on the ship, the Explorers’ Lounge, for our last Mamsen’s waffle of the cruise.

We are so close to the black sand beach that our phenomenal tour guide leads us there despite the directive. Explorer’s Lounge has certainly become my pre-dinner haunt and tonight again it is filled. Paolo has attracted quite a following on this sailing and tonight he has the crowd completely engaged, all of us singing along to oldies like My Girl, Country Roads and American Pie. Like the rest of Viking Sky, the Restaurant reflects a Scandinavian design, clean, sleek and done in restful shades of blue and beige.
Viking has arranged shuttle buses from the ship to Harpa concert hall every half hour and I arrive back at the ship just in time for my reservation at Viking Sky’s thermal suite. Our tour guide is exceptional, giving us a glimpse into Icelandic life and habits, its flora and fauna and even its successful battle against Covid 19. Our trip occurred in mid-July, and was the fifth Welcome Back Cruise in Iceland. At the time of our cruise, there were no COVID test requirements to enter Iceland. Our flight arrived about 9 AM, and Viking representatives were there to greet us.
